About

Sonnal naeryeo makgi (손날 내려막기), in English knife hand downward block, is in Kukkiwon terminology a form of the naeryeo makgi block, done top to bottom; naeryeo means downward, sonnal the edge of the hand. Kukkiwon describes it as a block against an attack on the stomach or groin, from chest height to the groin. It differs from arae makgi (naeryeo makgi with the outer wrist edge) in blocking surface, and from sonnal geodeureo naeryeo makgi in that the other hand does not support the blocking arm. Taekwondo Compendium lists it among the blocking techniques of the Pyongwon poomsae; Phoenix Taekwondo's photo breakdown shows it there in dwit kubi.
