About

Sonnal geodeureo bakkat makgi, literally supported knife-hand block outward (in English Knife Hand Supporting Outward Block), is a WT taekwondo knife-hand block (sonnal) in which the blocking hand is supported by the other hand. The Kukkiwon terminology dictionary explains geodeureo makgi as a one-hand block supported by the other, and bakkat makgi as a block moving from inside out. The Taekwondo Compendium lists it in poomsae overviews in shortened form as sonnal geodeureo makgi (Assisted Knife Hand Block), for Taegeuk Sah Jang, Taegeuk Pal Jang, Taebaek and Pyongwon. Per the Phoenix Taekwondo photo breakdown, in these poomsae and in Taegeuk Yook Jang it is done in dwit gubi, and in Taegeuk Pal Jang twice more in beom seogi. For Taegeuk Pal Jang the Compendium notes that the torso turns 30 to 45° during it.
