About
Sonnal an makgi (in English Knife Hand Inward Block) combines sonnal, the knife hand, with an makgi, an inward block. Kukkiwon terminology describes an makgi as a block moving from the outside of the defender's body inward; one of the blocking surfaces is precisely the knife edge, the outer edge of the palm. It differs from sonnal bakkat makgi by direction: there the hand moves outward. In the poomsae Keumgang, three sonnal an makgi follow one another, each in the dwit kubi stance. The Taekwondo Compendium (nbtkda.com) notes for them that all three blocks should have a starting position, even though some practitioners skip it, and that the outer forearm should end at the body's centerline, as with an ordinary inward block.
