About
Sonkal baro chookyo makgi, literally obverse rising knife-hand block, is in ITF Taekwondo a rising block (chookyo makgi) with the knife-hand (sonkal), with the qualifier baro, which the ITF lexicon translates as obverse. It differs from the block kyocha sonkal chookyo makgi in that it blocks with a single knife-hand, not two crossed. In the tul Choi-Yong it is movement 5 and 8, and in the tul Tong-Il movement 27 and 31, per the breakdowns of both dotaekwondo.net and taekwondo.sk. In all four movements it is performed in a walking stance (gunnun sogi), and the blocking hand is on the side of the front leg: in movement 5 of the tul Choi-Yong the left knife-hand in a left walking stance, in movement 8 the right in a right one.
