About

Sondung naeryo taerigi, in English back hand downward strike, is in ITF Taekwon-Do a strike with the back of the hand (son dung) directed downward (naeryo). Under this name, for the tul Choong-Jang (Chung Jang), it is given by the HED Tae Kwon-Do Schools materials for 2nd dan; the Cardiff Martial Arts overview also lists it. From dung joomuk naeryo taerigi it differs by name in tool: that strike uses the back of the fist. Per the dotaekwondo.net breakdown, these are movements 29 and 31 of the tul Choong-Jang. In movement 29 the practitioner strikes downward with the left back hand while turning on the right leg into a right L-stance (niunja sogi), with a stamp; in movement 31 with the right hand, stepping with a stamp into a left L-stance.
