About

Pi (劈) literally means to chop, split or cleave. With the Chinese straight sword jian it is a cut from top to bottom: the sword rises above the head and is pulled down in a vertical plane, similar to an axe chop. It is usually performed with a step forward into the bow stance. Pi is one of the 13 basic jian techniques, together with the thrust ci, the chop ge, the tip jab dian and others. It differs in the blade part it strikes with and in the path of movement; ci aims forward with the tip, while pi cuts with the edge top to bottom. We have not been able to document who compiled the set of 13 basic jian techniques.
