Quick Facts
About
Pi gun (劈棍) is a cut, a strike with the staff from top to bottom. In modern wushu it is a required technique of competitive staff (gunshu) routines. There it ranks among the basic strikes, alongside the horizontal spin ping lun gun, the cloud spin yun gun, beng gun, jiao gun, and the thrust chuo gun. A Chinese source calls it the counterpart of the saber cut pi dao (劈刀): the same downward principle, applied to a bladeless weapon. Pi gun differs from hua gun, the fluid circular movement of the staff tip, in being a single strike. We have not been able to document who included the technique in the competitive routines.
