Quick Facts
About
Pi dao (劈刀) is a downward cut with the Chinese dao saber. In modern competitive daoshu routines under IWUF rules it is one of the required techniques. It is first practiced on its own as an isolated movement with a pronounced rotation of the body, and only afterward incorporated into combinations and routines. Pi dao differs from the thrust zha dao (扎刀) and the upward cut liao dao (撩刀) in being a downward-directed cut; all three are basic techniques of competitive daoshu practiced separately. Daoshu (刀術) as a whole, according to one source, emphasizes chopping and cutting techniques performed with quick transitions between high and low stances.
