About
Kyocha sonkal kaunde makgi is, in ITF Taekwon-Do, a block with the hands crossed into an X shape, blocking with the knife-hand (sonkal) at the middle level of the body (kaunde). The United ITF Australia glossary gives it as X knifehand middle block. It differs from sonkal dung kaunde makgi in that both crossed hands work instead of one, and in the tool: it blocks with the knife-hand, not the reverse knife-hand (sonkal dung). Sources differ on the naming. English descriptions of the tul Ge-Baek, on dotaekwondo.net, label the same movement a checking block with the hands crossed into an X, that is, a checking block against an entering attack; this corresponds to the Korean name kyocha sonkal momchau makgi (X-knifehand checking block). Depending on the source, the same technique thus appears under either kaunde makgi or momchau makgi. The tul Ge-Baek opens with it: the first movement is an X-block with the knife-hand in the right walking stance, niunja sogi. In the ITF tul Choong-Moo it is the 27th movement.
