About
Ji (擠), known in English as press, is one of the eight gates of taijiquan. One source attributes to it a pressing quality similar to squeezing, another describes it as a compressing technique. It is performed with joined arms, which distinguishes it from the gate an, in which one pushes with placed palms. Ji belongs, together with peng, lu and an, to the four basic gates (ba men). In the simplified 24-posture form it is the third of the four movements of the Lan Que Wei group (Grasp Sparrow's Tail), between lu and an. It is applied in tui shou (push hands), where the eight gates serve practitioners to unbalance, displace or defeat one another. Tui shou is also held as a competition, which one source compares to judo or wrestling.
