About

Japgo mureup ollyeo chigi (English: Grabbing Upward Knee Strike) combines japgo, a grab, with mureup ollyeo chigi, an upward knee strike. Kukkiwon terminology states that, while grabbing the opponent, the knee can strike the solar plexus or abdomen. The Taekwondo Compendium (nbtkda.com) classes the knee strike among strikes with the tip of the bent knee. In Taegeuk Chil Jang it appears twice, each time from ap kubi. Per the Compendium, in sport WT poomsae the hands reach shoulder height, palms down, while the Kukkiwon standard takes them to head or neck height, palms inward; the arms bend, then straighten, and the hands pull down around the ankle. It is followed by du jumeok jeocheo jireugi.
