About

Ippon seoi nage (一本背負投) literally means one-arm shoulder throw. The attacker (tori) grips the opponent's arm with one hand, turns his back to him, threads his other arm under the opponent's arm, and after breaking his balance throws him over the shoulder. The aim is to put the opponent on his back and score full ippon in competition. In Kodokan judo it belongs among the throws (nage waza), in the hand-technique group (te waza), and is officially listed among shinmeisho no waza. It differs from morote seoi nage, where both hands grip the sleeve and opposite lapel, precisely by gripping the opponent's arm with only one hand. Eri seoi nage instead grips the sleeve and lapel on the same side. Seoi otoshi and hidari ippon seoi nage are described as its variants. Under IJF rules the throw scores ippon in competition when it combines speed, power, the opponent's impact on his back, and a controlled finish of the fall.
