About

Huen sau, literally the circling hand, is a wrist-circling motion in wing chun: the hand dips down and rises on the opposite side, or the reverse. The eWingChun glossary describes it as a circling, controlling hand. A small circle around the opponent's arm serves to shift between gates, turning the inside gate into the outside one or the other way round. In the Wikibooks teaching breakdown of the Siu Nim Tau form, huen sau appears repeatedly, always after tan sau and before jut sau; it is thus not a strike or a block on its own, but a transitional, controlling element between them. In a fighting-focused approach, huen sau leads from tan sau into wrapping the opponent's arm, producing a figure-four shoulder control.
