Quick Facts
About
Hua gun (花棍), loosely flower-spinning staff, denotes in Chinese wushu a family of techniques in which the tip of the staff is moved fluidly in circles and figure eights. As li wu hua gun (立五花棍), a vertical figure-eight spin is one of the staff techniques that competitive gunshu scores by its own deduction criteria. The same family includes the two-handed upward staff strike shuang shou ti liao hua gun (雙手提撩花棍). Hua gun differs from the cut pi gun, which is a single downward strike, in its fluid circular movement of the staff tip. We have not been able to document who introduced this way of spinning the staff.
