About
Hak nguang erawan (หักงวงเอราวัณ), literally break the elephant's trunk, is a defensive counter-technique of Thai fighting. When the opponent kicks to the ribs, the defender closes to short range, turns, and elbows the back of their thigh, blocking the opponent's calf with the left hand by pulling it upward. Sources classify it differently. According to the 8 Limbs Muay Thai blog, it belongs to the set kae thao 23 kon, a classic overview of 23 defenses against kicks. Lion Heart Academy lists it as the tenth mae mai technique, translated as break the elephant's tusks, while its fifteenth item is translated break the elephant's neck. Other names for the same technique are hak nguang aiyara and hak kor erawan. We have not been able to document who introduced the technique.
