About

Hadaka jime (裸絞) literally means naked strangle, and the name refers to the fact that it is applied without any grip on clothing. In one variant, the attacker wraps one arm around the opponent's neck, grips his own biceps or shoulder with the other hand, places the free hand behind the opponent's head, and presses the elbows together. The second variant clasps the hands together instead, creating more pressure but controlling the opponent's head less well. In Kodokan judo it belongs among the strangling techniques (shime waza), and unlike most of them it does not use the opponent's lapel. As a blood strangle, it restricts the oxygen supply to the brain. The aim is to put the opponent out or make him submit; the source puts average time to unconsciousness at about 8.9 seconds. Under IJF rules a successful strangle is scored ippon, and strangles are banned in competition for those younger than about 13. A similar hold, called the sleeper hold, appeared in professional wrestling in the eighteen-eighties with Evan Lewis, nicknamed the Strangler. If a strangle is not released in time, it leads to unconsciousness, brain damage, or death.
