About
Gong bu (弓步), known in English as bow stance or bow and arrow stance, is a bow-shaped stance of Chinese wushu, also known as deng shan bu, the mountain-climbing stance. The front leg points forward with the knee bent to 90°, the back leg is turned out 45° with its heel in line with the heel of the front leg. The front leg carries 70% of the weight, the back leg 30%. It is primarily an attacking stance, from which stronger arm strikes and fast kicks can be delivered. It differs from si liu bu in its weight distribution, since si liu bu carries a larger share of the weight on the back leg (60/40). Gong bu is one of the five basic stances of contemporary sport wushu, as established by the People's Republic of China, along with ma bu, zuo pan bu, fu hu bu, and xuan ji bu. Contemporary sport wushu practitioners hold gong bu lower than practitioners of traditional kung fu.
