About

Geodeo makgi (English: Deflecting Block) is, per Kukkiwon terminology, a block that pushes an opponent's attack sideways away from the defender's body: with hand or arm it sharply deflects the attack and steps out of the attacker's line. The Taekwondo Compendium (nbtkda.com) calls it Parrying Block, distinct from blocks that stop or absorb an attack by force. Kukkiwon also lists the directional variants naeryeo, bakkat, an and ollyeo geodeo makgi. In the poomsae Taebaek, geodeo makgi, per the Compendium, moves circularly from philtrum height to the belt; the palm starts up and ends turned out, the arm slightly bent, elbow at the same height throughout. The Phoenix Taekwondo photo breakdown shows three such blocks in Taebaek in ap kubi and calls them pushing block.
