About
Ci (刺) literally means to stab, pierce or prick, and denotes a forward thrust with the tip of the Chinese straight sword jian into the opponent. The blade is held vertically or horizontally, and at the end of the thrust the arm and blade form a single line. It is usually performed with a step into the bow stance gong bu. Ci is one of the 13 basic jian techniques; others include pi, ji, ge, xi, chou, dai, ti, dian, peng, jie, jiao and ya. It differs from pi, a cut with the edge top to bottom, in that it aims forward with the tip. We have not been able to document who compiled the set of 13 basic jian techniques and since when it has been taught this way.
