Quick Facts
About
Chiave, literally key, is in the Armizare of Fiore dei Liberi the name of one of the ligadure, locks and holds. Attested specifically is chiave forte, the strong key, within Italian wrestling (abrazare), part of Fiore's system. Fiore dei Liberi speaks in the introduction to his treatise of the knowledge of locks and of how to bind the opponent's arms. The treatise survives, among others, in the manuscripts Getty (MS Ludwig XV 13), Morgan (MS M.383) and Pisani Dossi from 1409. Exactly how chiave forte is performed and on which joint it acts, we have not been able to document.
