About

Brisé is a stick strike in French canne de combat and in bâton français, delivered with a vertical circular motion (moulinet) clockwise. It starts from the armé position, where the hand gripping the stick is held between the hip and the shoulder; the wrist opens slightly to let the stick rotate, and the arm extends at the moment the stick passes through the vertical plane level with the shoulders. It is a medium-range attack that can be aimed at all three zones, high, medium, and low. Canne de combat arose in the early 19th century from French stick self-defence, and in the 1970s Maurice Sarry standardised it for sport competition under the Fédération française de savate boxe française. Brisé is one of its six basic attacks alongside croisé tête, latéral croisé, latéral extérieur, enlevé, and croisé bas, and a student learns it already at the Bleu (blue pommeau) grade. It differs from enlevé in the opposite direction of rotation and in that enlevé targets mainly the leg. Bouts are fought in a 9 m diameter circle, thrusting attacks are forbidden, and on impact the stick must be in line with the extended arm. In bâton français, brisé is distinguished as "mains écartées", with the hands apart at shoulder width, and "mains serrées", with the hands together; both variants target the head and crown, and the weight is distributed over both legs.
