About

Ap kkoa seogi (앞 꼬아서기), in English front cross stance, is according to Kukkiwon terminology a variant of the crossed stance kkoa seogi: the moving foot moves in front of the supporting foot, whereas in dwi kkoa seogi it goes behind it. Kukkiwon describes kkoa seogi as a stance with a lowered center of gravity, in which the feet cross during a shift or turn forward, backward, or sideways. Ap means forward. Taekwondo Compendium lists it among the stances of the Taegeuk Pal Jang and Pyongwon poomsae. In Taegeuk Pal Jang it serves as a transition: the rear foot does not pivot when stepping out of ap kubi, both knees stay bent, and the arms prepare into the starting position of the oesanteul makgi block. In Pyongwon it appears twice, per Phoenix Taekwondo's photo breakdown with the double-elbow strike du palgup yeop chigi; the Compendium there calls for the rear heel raised and the whole front foot on the ground.
