General overview of grades

This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

In ITF Taekwondo, founded by General Choi Hong Hi in 1955, there are 10 Gup student ranks and 9 Dan master ranks. The belt system reflects the Sine Wave theory, mastery of the 24 Tul patterns, power breaking (Kyokpa), and hand/foot self-defense in semi-contact sparring.

10th Gup – White Belt

Absolute beginner. First contact with Taekwondo, practicing stances (Seogi) and dojang ethics.

Symbolism & Meaning

White signifies innocence. The student has no previous knowledge of Taekwondo.
