Ragione di adoprar sicuramento l'Arme by Giacomo di Grassi (1570) is one of the most influential Italian fencing texts. Di Grassi simplified the theoretical principles of rapier fencing – he advocated the use of straight-line, natural thrusting attacks instead of complex slashes, and he introduced the principle that hand and blade speed are superior to stride.
