Cold Steel (Alfred Hutton, 1889)

Victorian-era military sabre and bayonet fencing system compiled by a British officer.

AuthorAlfred Hutton
Dating1889

Alfred Hutton, a British cavalry officer and fencing historian, published the manual Cold Steel: A Practical Treatise on the Sabre in 1889. Drawing on 19th-century military fencing practice as well as older European sources, he systematized techniques for the cutting sabre, bayonet, and single-stick. He was a key figure in the Victorian revival of interest in historical fencing, and his students later gave public demonstrations of old combat systems. Hutton thereby laid groundwork for the later historical European martial arts reconstruction movement.
