This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Shin Muso Hayashizaki-ryu, founded by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu in 16th-century Japan, is the mother fountainhead of virtually all Iaijutsu and Iaido styles. Its 5-license hierarchy (Shoden to Menkyo Kaiden) evaluates instantaneous long sword drawing from Seiza/Iai-goshi, the single Nukitsuke strike, and Chiburi blade clearing.

Shoden (Beginning Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Basic Kamae stances, rapid Nukiuchi sword drawing from Seiza, and core kata.

Symbolism & Meaning

Foundational Iaijutsu koryu school created by Hayashizaki Jinsuke in 16th century.

Chuden (Middle Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Drawing sword while walking in crowds, instant Kiritsuke cut, & Chiburi blade cleaning.

Symbolism & Meaning

Instantaneous elimination of opponent at the exact moment their sword leaves scabbard.

Okuden (Deep Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Paired Kumitachi koryu forms, sword disarms, and close combat with Wakizashi.

Symbolism & Meaning

Secret samurai sword drawing methods intended for palace guards.

Mokuroku (Catalog Scroll)

Typical gap since previous grade: 60 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Official Hayashizaki-ryu technique scroll. Authorization to instruct in dōjō.

Symbolism & Meaning

Shihan = Licensed master and keeper of the founding Iaijutsu lineage.

Menkyo Kaiden (Full Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 120 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Highest koryu scroll. Living Soke and absolute global guarantor of founding Iai school.

Symbolism & Meaning

Menkyo Kaiden = Supreme living Soke and representative of founding Iaijutsu genealogy.
