Hong KongBiography
Yip Ching was a Hong Kong Wing Chun master and the second son of Ip Man and Cheung Wing-sing. He was born on July 7, 1936, in Foshan and died on January 25, 2020, in Hong Kong at the age of 83; he was cremated on February 8, 2020, at Cape Collinson Crematorium. His older brother was Yip Chun, and his sisters were Yip Nga-sum and Ip Nga-wun.
He formally began training Wing Chun under his father in 1943, at the age of seven. He learned at home and also by watching his father teach his students, serving as an assistant instructor at his father's school. When Ip Man moved to Hong Kong in 1949, Yip Ching stayed in Foshan; he came to Hong Kong with his brother in 1962. After Ip Man's death in 1972 he continued privately teaching students.
He earned his living in the textile business; he left it in 1994 to devote himself fully to teaching Wing Chun and began teaching formally within the Ving Tsun Sports Association. He was also associated with the Yip Ching Ving Tsun Sports Association, which bears his name. He is often cited as one of the five grandmasters of Ip Man's family in Wing Chun. Among the forms he passed on is Chum Kiu.
Together with his brother Yip Chun he served as a Wing Chun consultant on the films Ip Man 3 and Ip Man 4: The Finale. He himself did not want to act in the films or give interviews; on screen he was portrayed by Jim Liu (Ip Man 3) and Ye He (Ip Man 4).
