In sources on the Zi Ran Men style (Natural Fist), Xu Ai'san is referred to as Dwarf Xu and as the founder of this style, which is rooted in Taoist philosophy. We have not been able to verify the dates of his birth or death.
We know him primarily from the biography of his student Du Xinwu. Du Xinwu sought him out in Yunnan province after a public challenge and trained under him until completing his training at sixteen. Du Xinwu is also the only documented student to whom Xu Ai'san passed on his teaching. We have not found further details about his life, origin, or training in the sources.
