Biography

Raden Haji Ibrahim, known also as R. Djajaperbata, was a West Javanese master who created and developed the pencak Cikalong style, drawing on family martial tradition. He was born in 1816 in Dalem Cikundul in the Majalaya area, in Cikalong Kulon district in West Java. He belonged to the ninth generation of descendants of Dalem Cikundul; his father was R. Rajadireja, known as Aom Raja, his grandfather R. Wiranagara, known as Aria Cikalong.

His teachers included R. Ateng Alimudin, a student of Tubagus Kosim, of the thirteenth generation of descendants of Sultan Hasanuddin of Banten, and also Abang Ma'rup, Abang Madi and Abang Kari.

The Cikalong style rests on two elements: $q$permainan rasa$q$ (the play of feeling), the ability to sense the opponent's movement through physical contact, and $q$ulin peupeuhan,$q$ the Sundanese doctrine of strikes based on speed and explosive power. He did not charge for teaching and accepted only a limited number of students who met strict requirements of obedience toward the teacher, the government, parents and religion.

He died in 1906 at the age of 90 and was buried in the family cemetery in Dalem Cikundul in Cikalong Kulon in the Cianjur area. Through his sons and students his teaching spread into southern Cianjur and southern Garut, especially in plantation areas, until the 1930s.
