Quick Facts
GermanyBiography
Peter von Danzig was a German fencing master of the 15th century. He was born in Gdańsk (then Danzig) and was active in Ingolstadt in Bavaria. His date of birth is unknown; he died between 1452 and approximately 1470. Around 1470 Paulus Kal included him in the roster of the Fellowship of Liechtenauer.
His name is linked to the manuscript Cod. 44.A.8 (the Starhemberg Fechtbuch) of 1452, which is often mistakenly attributed to him in its entirety. The manuscript is in fact a compilation of treatises by several masters; Peter von Danzig is responsible only for the final part, a gloss on Liechtenauer's verse treatise on combat with the short sword.
This gloss interprets Liechtenauer's cryptic teaching in practical terms, including combat in full armor, and also covers spear work, sword techniques, grappling applications and combat sequences. We have not been able to establish from the sources who taught him fencing.
