Biography

Maul Mornie is a Bruneian silat master and founder of the style Silat Suffian Bela Diri (SSBD). He was born on 20 April 1977 in Seria in the Belait district of Brunei. He lives in Cardiff, Wales, and returns to Brunei roughly every three months for six-week stays.

He learned silat from the age of 12 in a family style under the guidance of his grandfather and great-grandfather. While studying engineering in the United Kingdom, he also took up Japanese jujutsu.

He began publicly teaching his style in 2007. By 2008 he was already leading seminars on several continents, and for 2009 he had 45 weekend seminars booked around the world. He spends roughly 80 percent of his weekends traveling and teaching. Practitioners from 14 countries train directly under him; SSBD does not offer remote or video instruction.

The style focuses on traditional bela diri, meaning self-defense, rather than sport silat, and also includes weapons work such as the knife and the kerambit.
