Quick Facts
ChinaBiography
Liang Zhenpu was a Chinese baguazhang master and the founder of the style bearing his name, Liang baguazhang. We have not been able to verify the dates of his birth and death in the sources.
According to Chinese sources, in his youth he learned martial arts from the escort master Qin Fengyi. In 1876 he came to Beijing and worked as an apprentice in the Wanxing clothing shop outside the Qianmen gate, from which he got the nickname Clothing Liang. At 16 he was introduced by Yin Fu to Dong Haichuan, with whom he trained alongside the senior students Yin Fu, Cheng Tinghua and Liu Dekuan. He is counted among Dong's famous students who became teachers themselves.
At 20, after the death of his parents, he opened his own school. He taught martial arts as a physical education teacher at the women's teacher training school in Shulu County and at the secondary school in Ji County, and founded the De Sheng escort company, which operated until 1928. His students included his son Liang Baoyan, Guo Gumin, Li Shao'an, Tian Jinfeng, Dong Wenxiu and Li Ziming.
Most present-day baguazhang practitioners practise the Yin, Cheng or Liang style; although all three were students of the same teacher, their methods and the execution of palm techniques differ.
