Biography

Jörg Wilhalm Hutter, also referred to simply as Jörg Wilhalm, was an Augsburg fencing master documented between 1520 and 1523. The dates of his birth and death we have not been able to verify. Augsburg tax records from 1501, 1504 and 1516 list him as a hatter (Hutter).

In 1522 he produced the manuscripts Cod.I.6.4º.5 and Cod.I.6.2º.3, with illustrations of duels in armour, on foot and on horseback; the second of them also contains text. In 1523 he wrote a treatise on combat with the longsword in the Liechtenauer tradition, the manuscript Cod.I.6.2º.2. In the same year the compilation manuscript Cgm 3711 was produced, combining the previous three works and adding 32 new illustrations of judicial duels without captions.

His treatises drew on material from the end of the 15th century, specifically the manuscript MS Cl. 23842 from the 1480s to 1490s, including matter attributed to a certain Nicolaüs dated 1489. Who taught him fencing we have not found in the sources.
