Biography

Jakob Sutor (von Baden) was a fencing master and freelance fencer (Freifechter). He was born in the 16th century in Baden and died in the 17th century; the exact dates we have not been able to verify.

In 1612 he published in Frankfurt am Main, with Johann Bringer, the book Neues Künstliches Fechtbuch, with woodcuts by unknown artists. It describes fencing with the longsword, the dussack, the rapier, the staff and the halberd, including stances, strikes, footwork and defence. There are references to an earlier edition of the book, but direct proof that it ever existed is lacking.

Sutor identified with the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer. His text clearly draws on Joachim Meyer's treatise of 1570 and also shows a connection with Michael Hundt's treatise of 1611. Who taught him fencing we have not found in the sources.
