Hugo Wittenwiler, in the sources also Hugonis dicti Wittenwiller or Hugues Wittenwiler, is a name associated with manuscript Cgm 558, the so-called Schwabenspiegel codex from around 1493. According to the source, however, he was probably not its author but only its scribe. We have not been able to verify his dates of birth and death.
He came from a lower Swiss noble family from Wittenwil in what is now the canton of Thurgau, which was already impoverished by 1339. He probably belonged to the Toggenburg branch of the family and lived in Toggenburg, Liechtenstein or Wil.
The manuscript is written in Alemannic Early New High German and covers combat with the longsword, staff or spear, mounted combat, combat with the baselard (a short sword), dagger and short knife, unarmed defense against a dagger, wrestling and hunting. It shows little or no connection to the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer. The first printed English edition of the manuscript was produced by Hull in 2008.
