Hans von Speyer was a German scribe probably born near Speyer in the mid-15th century. In the history of European fencing he is known as the compiler of the Codex Speyer manuscript.
He completed the manuscript in 1491. It is one of the major compilations of fechtbücher, fencing books, in the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer. The source lists it under the shelf mark MS M.I.29.
We have not been able to find anything in the sources about his training, his teachers, or whether he practised fencing himself. According to an unconfirmed conjecture he may have been involved around 1455 in preparing type for Gutenberg's 42-line Bible; the source explicitly adds, however, that this may not be the same man.
