Quick Facts
JapanBiography
Chikamatsu Shigenori, by his full name Chikamatsu Hikonoshin Fujiwara Shigenori, was born in 1695 in Owari Province, in today's Aichi Prefecture, and died in 1778. He also used the names Hikonoshin, Nankai and Nogenshi. The source lists military matters and the tea ceremony (chanoyu) as his interests.
His father Chikamatsu Shigekiyo was a retainer of the Tokugawa clan in Owari. At 17 Shigenori was appointed a page to the ruler of Owari. After this ruler's death he was transferred to the administration of the stables and grooms at a lower salary.
According to the source, he wrote about a hundred books on military subjects; we have not been able to verify their titles or contents. By 1739 he had completed the seven-volume work Chanoyu kojidan (Legends of the Tea Ceremony) with 305 stories, which remained unpublished at his death in 1778.
A selection of 129 stories was published posthumously in 1804 as Chaso kanwa (Tales from the Tea House Window), and a second edition followed in 1816.
