Quick Facts
ItalyBiography
Camillo Palladini was a professional fencing master from Bologna, active around 1600. Around 1609 he is documented as one of the fencing masters working in Rome; that year Torquato d'Alessandri lists him among the Roman masters as "Camillo Paladino." We have not been able to verify the dates of his birth and death.
He is the author of the manuscript Discorso sopra l'arte della scherma (MS 14/10) from around 1600. The manuscript deals with combat with the sword alone, sword and dagger, sword and cloak, two swords, spadone, pike and halberd, and combines the older Bolognese tradition with the emerging rapier technique. It carries no dedication and no documented patron.
The French treatise by André des Bordes from 1610 apparently draws largely on Palladini's work, though without illustrations. An English translation of Palladini's manuscript was published in 2019 by the Royal Armouries.
