Quick Facts
RussiaBiography
Alexander Retuinskih is the Russian founder of the Systema ROSS system (Rossiyskaya otechestvennaya sistema samozashchity). We have not been able to verify the date or place of his birth.
He was a USSR boxing champion and a Master of Sport in both sambo and judo. The English Wikipedia also states a combat sambo title, but this claim remains unverified. Until 1991 he was a partner of Alexei Kadochnikov in his system.
In 1991 he founded his own system, Systema ROSS. A patent for it as a “know-how” and a trademark were registered on 4 April 1991 with the state enterprise Informpatent under the Committee of the Russian Federation. The system was recognized by the All-Russian Federation of Russian Martial Arts (RFRMA). The source describes ROSS as a methodology for raising combat performance, usable in any martial art, rather than as a closed system. According to the source, the American sambo coach Scott Sonnon contributed significantly to its international spread.
Retuinskih appeared in the History Channel documentary The Human Weapon, in the episode on Russian sambo. In 2007, according to the English Wikipedia, he was chosen among the “100 most influential people of Russia”; this claim, however, carries a note about the unreliability of the source.
