Inside Kung-Fu

1973–2011United States

American magazine on Chinese martial arts, kung-fu and modern wushu, published from December 1973 to April 2011.

Inside Kung-Fu was an American English-language magazine published from December 1973 to April 2011. Its name is written with a hyphen and without one in sources, so also Inside Kung Fu. The magazine focused on Chinese martial arts, that is kung-fu and modern wushu, and on tournaments and other events in the United States and China. It also covered Filipino martial arts, self-defense and martial arts in film. It was published monthly. The magazine ran its own Hall of Fame, into which it inducted martial artists. We have not been able to find out whether this tradition ended with the magazine or continued later. Over nearly four decades the magazine had several publishers. We have not been able to reliably document in sources who founded the magazine; the founder is not named in the English Wikipedia overview of the magazine either. We also did not find a complete list of editors-in-chief. The last issue appeared in April 2011. We did not find the reasons for the end of publication in sources.

Origin

The first issue of Inside Kung-Fu appeared in the United States in December 1973. According to the listing of the November 1990 issue (volume 17, issue 9), the magazine was then published by CFW Enterprises Inc. From 2006 the magazine was owned by Action Pursuit Group Media, under which it was published until the last issue in April 2011. We took the 1990 publisher information from the title of the archived item and have not been able to verify the masthead itself. We did not find the founder's name in a sufficiently reliable source.
