Quick Facts
About the kata
Seiryu (十六) is one of eight empty-hand kata practiced in Uechi-ryu. Its name literally means "sixteen" and matches the style's other numeral names, Seisan ("thirteen") and Sanseiryu ("thirty-six"). Unlike them, however, it does not come from the Chinese Pangai-noon system: according to the English Wikipedia, it was created in 1950 by Kanei Uechi, son of Kanbun Uechi. In the list of Uechi-ryu kata it ranks sixth, between Seisan and Kanchin. The kata combines so-called dragon techniques performed in rotation. According to shogunmartialarts.org.uk, four such techniques follow one another immediately, which is why the kata teaches stability; the Uechi-ryu Oryukai site adds that it requires strong legs, good balance, and coordination. How many movements the kata has, how many kiai shouts, and what shape its embusen takes, we have not been able to document in the sources we reviewed. The Bennetts Karate dojo syllabus prescribes it for the 2nd dan exam, between Seisan for 1st dan and Kanchin for 3rd dan. We did not find other Uechi-ryu schools in the sources that would confirm this grade.

Meaning of the name
The characters 十六 literally mean "sixteen". Uechi-ryu Oryukai and Uechi-ryu Kenkyujo interpret the number sixteen as expressing the attainment of maturity, since adulthood was traditionally recognized at thirteen. shogunmartialarts.org.uk also gives an alternative phonetic translation, "form of ten dragons", from the ten dragon techniques in the kata. Besides Seiryu, the form Seirui is also used, under which the English Wikipedia lists the kata among the style's kata.
Creator and history
The year 1950 given by the English Wikipedia places Seiryu earlier than Kanshu, created as Daini Seisan by Seiki Itokazu only in 1956; the same source dates Kanchin to the nineteen-fifties. Per Wikipedia, Kanei Uechi (1911–1991) developed new methods and forms from 1931 until his death, meant to make the style easier for students to grasp. Sources differ on who exactly created the new kata. One version of the English Wikipedia page on Uechi-ryu attributes them to Kanei Uechi alone, another to Kanei Uechi "and other senior students of Kanbun". Wikipedia, Uechi-ryu Oryukai, and Uechi-ryu Kenkyujo, however, agree in crediting Seiryu to Kanei Uechi.
In competition
On the official WKF kata list for 2026, Seiryu appears under number 84, so it can also be performed at World Karate Federation competitions. The official WUKF kata list from April 2024 lists Seiryu under Uechi-ryu twice: among the optional tokui kata under its plain name, and among the compulsory shitei kata as "Seiryu (Kiyohide)". We believe the epithet refers to Kiyohide Shinjo, since according to the English Wikipedia he leads the Kenyukai association within Uechi-ryu and was a nine-time all-Okinawa champion in both kata and kumite. The list itself does not explain this, however, and we have not been able to document how this version differs.
