The Raid 2

The Raid 2 (original title The Raid 2: Berandal) is an Indonesian action thriller written and directed by Gareth Evans. The 2014 film follows on from The Raid (2011), and Iko Uwais again plays the police officer Rama. Rama goes undercover in prison, grows close to the son of Bangun, the boss of a criminal syndicate, and becomes his man in order to expose corruption in the police. As in Merantau and The Raid, the fights showcase Indonesian pencak silat, and their choreographer is Yayan Ruhian. The fights take place in moving cars, in a subway carriage, in a noodle bar, in warehouses, in printing rooms, in narrow corridors, and in the kitchen and wine cellar of a nightclub. The world premiere took place on 21 January 2014 at the Sundance festival, and the film reached American cinemas on 28 March 2014. Because of the American R rating, according to Evans only a minimum of frames had to be cut; in Malaysia the film was banned for excessive violence. In Indonesia 1,434,272 tickets were sold in 2014. In November 2016 Evans called a third instalment unlikely.

Origin

Gareth Evans wrote the script titled Berandal as early as 2009, and for two years he failed to find money for it. The original concept told of a young man who befriends a mafia boss's son in prison, becomes his enforcer after release, and has to survive a gang war. After the success of The Raid, Evans substantially rewrote the script to follow on from the story of the first film, and added a police storyline. The film was produced by the companies Stage 6 Films, XYZ Films and PT. Merantau Films.

Fight choreography

Gareth Evans said he would not have made a fighting film without Yayan Ruhian. Ruhian choreographed the film and also plays the character Prakoso in it; Julie Estelle, who plays Hammer Girl, trained in pencak silat for the role. Cecep Arif Rahman, a silat practitioner, appears in the role of The Assassin. Filming lasted about seven months, from January to July 2013. According to Evans, 95 % of the shots were filmed on RED Scarlet cameras, the slow-motion shots on Epic, and GoPro 3 cameras were used for the quick cuts of the car chase.
