What it is about
A village hires seven rōnin to defend it against bandits.
The fighting in it
Kurosawa had the cast drill with wooden swords for months and deliberately stripped out spectacle: the duels are short, dirty and settled by a single cut. The character Kyūzō shows what real superiority in trained swordsmanship looks like — the opponent never gets to act.
