General overview of grades

This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Ki Aikido (Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido), founded by Koichi Tohei in 1971, pairs traditional Kyu/Dan ranks with a parallel Ki grading system (Shokyu to Shin-Kyoshi). The hierarchy evaluates mind-body coordination, Ki testing, relaxed effortless throws, and Jo staff and Bokken sword forms.

1st Duan – Green Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 6 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Combining strong Hung Gar stances and fast Choy Gar arms. Siu Lok Han form.

Symbolism & Meaning

Tiger and Eagle in one body. Growth of power and speed.

2nd Duan – Blue Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Weapon training: Staff (Kwan) and Double Broadswords. Advanced sparring.

Symbolism & Meaning

Fluid energy flow and relaxed explosive power.

3rd Duan – Black Level (Sifu)

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Jow Ga Master (Sifu). Full mastery of 18 traditional weapons and lion dance.

Symbolism & Meaning

Legacy of founder Jow Hip. Reaching the peak of technical and moral maturity.
