This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.
10th Gup – White Belt
Basic stance, Korean Nakbop breakfalls, front kicks, and fist strikes.
Korean academic MMA system developed at Yong In University.
9th Gup – White-Yellow Belt
Ap Chagi front snap kicks, punch combinations, and takedown entries.
Developing fluid transition from standing posture to ground combat.
8th Gup – Yellow Belt
Yop Chagi side kicks and basic Hapkido wrist joint locks.
Integrating joint locks into striking exchanges.
7th Gup – Green Belt
Hapkido takedowns, Judo throws, and basic joint locks in ground combat.
Synthesis of striking and grappling techniques in one fluid flow.
6th Gup – Green-Blue Belt
Ground pin control, mount transitions, and armbar submissions.
Solidifying dominance in Yongmudo ground grappling.
5th Gup – Blue Belt
Taekwondo kick combinations with choking techniques and full-contact sparring.
Advanced ability to transition from long-range kick to close grapple.
4th Gup – Blue-Brown Belt
Takedown defense, clinch counters, and knee strikes to the body.
Tactical distance control in full-contact sparring.
3rd Gup – Brown Belt
Self-defense vs weapons, ground control, and black belt exam preparation.
Pre-master level requiring academic maturity and versatility.
2nd Gup – Red Belt
Advanced flying spinning kicks, leg locks, and full-contact sparring.
High level coordination of striking, throwing, and submission grappling.
1st Gup – Red-Black Belt
Comprehensive testing across all 4 combat ranges & Chodan exam prep.
Pre-master maturity before entering the black belt ranks.
1st Dan – Chodan (Black Belt)
Full master rank. Official instructor of International Yongmudo Association (IYMA).
Chodan = Black belt as proof of mastering Korean all-round martial arts.
2nd Dan – I-Dan
Applied self-defense under pressure, competition judging, and university coaching.
Developing tactical overview in all-round combat competition.
3rd Dan – Sam-Dan
Leading IYMA training centers and national instructor training.
Teaching maturity in Yong In University martial system.
4th Dan – Sabomnim (Master)
Senior master rank. Academic research of Yongmudo and training instructors.
Sabomnim = Chief academic teacher and guarantor of modern Korean MMA tradition.
