General overview of grades

This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Sun Style Taijiquan, created by grandmaster Sun Lutang in early 20th-century China, merges Tai Chi, Xingyiquan, and Baguazhang. The Duanwei system (1st to 6th Duan) evaluates agile Huabu follow-stepping, high upright stances, smooth open-close Kai Hei palm transitions, and Neigong internal energy.

1st Duan – White Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 6 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Basic Sun Style stance, nimble Huabu steps, and internal Kai-He breathing.

Symbolism & Meaning

Unique internal style created by Sun Lutang combining Tai Chi, Xingyi, and Bagua.

2nd Duan – Green Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Sun Taijiquan 73 forms set, paired Tui Shou, and internal energy harmonization.

Symbolism & Meaning

Linking high upright stances with continuous internal force flow.

3rd Duan – Blue Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 18 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Training with straight Sun Taiji Jian sword and paired fencing drills.

Symbolism & Meaning

Connecting internal power with the sword tip in direct engagement.

4th Duan – Silver Dragon

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Explosive Fa Jin force release in close space and reactive Tui Shou.

Symbolism & Meaning

Achieving high level of Ting Jin listening sensitivity in combat.

5th Duan – Gold Dragon (Sifu)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Awarding Sifu title. Running instruction, spreading health and martial Sun Style.

Symbolism & Meaning

Sifu = Teacher and guarantor of Sun Lutang's traditional legacy.

6th Duan – Black Dragon (Grandmaster)

Typical gap since previous grade: 60 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Highest achievable rank. Total unity of mind, movement, and internal Qigong.

Symbolism & Meaning

Grandmaster = Living representative and head of Sun Style Tai Chi lineage.
