This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.
6th Kyu – Rokkyu
Basic stance, fist strikes wearing Bogu armor, and Tsuki/Geri kicks.
Japanese full-contact martial art founded by Muneomi Sawayama in 1932.
5th Kyu – Gokyu
Strike combinations to Men helmet, takedowns, and joint locks in full gear.
Training real full-contact force utilizing protective helmet and vest.
4th Kyu – Yonkyu
Knee strike combinations, clinch striking, and armored Ne-waza ground combat.
Synthesizing boxing, karate kicks, and judo takedowns in one arena.
3rd Kyu – Sankyu
Kaeshi-waza counters, instant throws off opponent strike, and Ji-kumite sparring.
Advanced preparation for All-Japan University Championships.
2nd Kyu – Nikyu
Jiai tournament match tactics, chokes, and joint locks in full speed.
Deepening competition strategy at national championships.
1st Kyu – Ikkyu
Pre-master rank requiring physical maturity and resilience in armor.
Preparation for Shodan examination and full membership in JKF.
1st Dan – Shodan
Full master rank. Official instructor of Japan Kempo Federation (JKF).
Shodan = Black belt as proof of mastering Japanese military & sports Budo.
2nd Dan – Nidan
Advanced armored combinations and refereeing national JKF tournaments.
Deepening tactical overview in full-contact Budo competition.
3rd Dan – Sandan (Senior Master)
Senior Shihan title. Training police and self-defense forces in Japan.
Shihan = Respected authority and guarantor of uncompromising full-contact Nippon Kempo.
4th Dan – Yondan
Leading regional JKF federations and certifying national instructors.
Prerequisite for achieving higher methodological titles in Japan.
5th Dan – Godan (Hanshi)
Highest rank in JKF. Living legend and chief methodologist of Sawayama lineage.
Hanshi = Supreme living representative and guardian of full-contact Nippon Kempo.
