This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Maniwa Nen-ryu, established in 16th-century Kozuke Province, Japan, is one of the oldest surviving samurai koryu traditions. Its 5-license hierarchy (Shoden to Menkyo Kaiden) evaluates Kenjutsu sword, Naginata halberd, Yagyu-bo staff, knife disarming, and Yadamari arrow deflection techniques.

Shoden (Beginning Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Basic Kenjutsu sword stances, long Naginata halberd, and Yadome wood shields.

Symbolism & Meaning

Ancient koryu school from 14th century (founded in 1368 by Higuchi Jirozaemon).

Chuden (Middle Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Unique deflecting of incoming arrows with sword/halberd (Yadome-jutsu) & staff.

Symbolism & Meaning

Famous skill of village samurai defending walls against projectile weapons.

Okuden (Deep Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Long Yagora Yari spear combat, hooks, and Kodachi short sword in full gear.

Symbolism & Meaning

Secret combat forms preserved by the Higuchi clan in Gunma prefecture.

Mokuroku (Catalog Scroll)

Typical gap since previous grade: 48 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Official koryu technique scroll. Authorization to teach in Maniwa village.

Symbolism & Meaning

Scroll confirming master-level knowledge of complete Nen-ryu arsenal.

Menkyo Kaiden (Full Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 72 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Highest koryu scroll. Full mastery in unbroken Higuchi family lineage awarded.

Symbolism & Meaning

Menkyo Kaiden = Soke / Living head of ancient Maniwa Nen-ryu tradition.
