This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Kurama-ryu Kenjutsu, founded by Ono Shogoro in 16th-century Kyoto on Mount Kurama, is a celebrated samurai koryu fencing tradition. Its 5-license hierarchy (Kirigami to Menkyo Kaiden) evaluates leaping Hyo-to sword strikes, Seigan stances, rapid counter-attacks, and the decisive single strike.

Kirigami (Entry Scroll)

Requirements & Focus

Koryu Kamae sword stances, leaping katana cuts, and basic paired kata.

Symbolism & Meaning

Ancient Kyoto koryu school from Mount Kurama founded by Otsu Shichirozaemon.

Mokuroku (Full Catalog Scroll)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Official technique scroll. Mastery of rapid leaping thrusts and Iai counters.

Symbolism & Meaning

Kurama = Legend of Tengu from Mount Kurama teaching samurai leaping cuts.

Menkyo (Teaching License)

Typical gap since previous grade: 60 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Jujutsu immobilization sets, Kodachi short sword combat, and tactical shinan.

Symbolism & Meaning

Teaching license authorizing independent instruction of Kurama tradition.

Shihan (Senior Master)

Typical gap since previous grade: 96 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Secret spiritual teachings, Mount Kurama meditation, and emergency dueling.

Symbolism & Meaning

Senior Shihan responsible for ritual ceremonies and sword transmission purity.

Menkyo Kaiden (Full Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 120 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Highest koryu scroll. Living Soke and absolute global guarantor of the tradition.

Symbolism & Meaning

Menkyo Kaiden = Supreme living representative and head of Kurama-ryu.
