General overview of grades

This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Bak Mei Kung Fu (White Eyebrow Fist), created by Taoist monk Bak Mei in 18th-century Guangdong, is an aggressive Southern Chinese Hakka style. The Duanwei rank system (1st to 6th Duan) evaluates rapid Phoenix-eye knuckle strikes, explosive short-range core power (Sik Gong), Chin Na joint locks, and Jom Sik forms.

1st Duan – Green Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 6 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Basic Mabu stance, explosive short punches Jau San Kuen, and faet jin breathing.

Symbolism & Meaning

Entry into the uncompromising Southern Chinese style of monk White Eyebrow.

2nd Duan – Blue Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Sup Jee Kuen (Cross form), rapid phoenix-eye fist strikes, and parries.

Symbolism & Meaning

Developing focused single-finger power to sensitive anatomical targets.

3rd Duan – Silver Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 18 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Sam Mun Kuen (Three Gates form), staff training, and close-range kicks.

Symbolism & Meaning

Defensive and offensive control of body's three gates simultaneously.

4th Duan – Black Level

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Advanced Saam Bat Jin form, Chin Na joint locks, and full-contact sparring.

Symbolism & Meaning

High level of explosive Fa Jin internal power characteristic of Bak Mei.

5th Duan – Gold Level (Sifu)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Awarding Sifu title. Running a traditional Kwoon and butterfly swords combat.

Symbolism & Meaning

Sifu = Teacher and keeper of Cheung Lai Chuen's Bak Mei lineage.

6th Duan – Gold Dragon (Grandmaster)

Typical gap since previous grade: 60 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Highest achievable rank. Total mastery of internal breathing and strike power.

Symbolism & Meaning

Grandmaster = Living legendary authority and head of White Eyebrow school.
